Condition of the Artwork Before Restoration

The painting was covered with a thick layer of grime and dirt trapped within layers of discolored varnish. Secondary old retouchings extend beyond the damages areas over the intact orignal, and their extent constitutes approximately 30% of the whole painting layer.

Retouches are inappropriate, adjusted to the tonality of the old darkened varnish. Locally, the overpainted areas are lacking the ground layer. Overpaintings and retouchings are both

oil-based, which significantly complicates the removal.
The painting was damaged in the past by aggressive removal and the upper layers of the glazes are missing.
