Stav díla před restaurováním
The painting was covered with a thick layer of surface dirt. Localized losses were present in both the paint layer and ground, with areas of loose and unstable paint. The canvas was significantly warped, with several tears or cuts, and additional localized distortions affected the painted surface, likely due to the canvas’s sensitivity to humidity or water exposure. A thick layer of dust was present on the reverse of the canvas and within its structure.
A paper label bearing a signature was adhered to the back of the canvas. The stretcher was loose and lacked a spacer/distance bar. The painting was mounted in the decorative frame using nails, an unsuitable method of attachment.
The decorative frame presented multiple minor defects, with areas of loose or flaking polychromy. The frame’s corners were not joined at a true 45-degree mitre, resulting in instability and visible gaps.
Stav díla po restaurování
The painting was removed from its stretcher, which lacked the ability to adjust tension and did not allow for correction of the canvas’s planar distortions and corner creasing. Tears were mended and the canvas reinforced with strip-lining, then remounted onto a new, custom-made stretcher. Surface cleaning and removal of dirt and discoloured varnish were carried out, followed by filling of areas of loss and reversible retouching. A final protective spray varnish was applied.
The paper label found adhered to the reverse of the canvas was transferred onto archival board and securely mounted to the reverse, ensuring it remains legible and preserved without affecting canvas tension.
The original decorative frame was retained, with its opened mitre joints corrected and secured, and its polychrome surface restored in areas where lost or failing. Protective measures were also applied to the frame’s rabbet, where the painting’s edges come into direct contact with the frame, to help prevent future abrasion and damage.
