Condition of the Artwork Before Restoration

The original painting’s delicate canvas backing was likely trimmed, with the painting folded over the stretcher frame along the left, top, and right edges. The canvas was later relined onto a coarse secondary canvas using a glue-starch mixture. The original canvas is concave and warped.

The stretcher frame is made of very narrow, unevenly beveled strips, firmly joined without spacing or the option for wedging. The nails securing the canvas to the stretcher are rusted and unsuitable.

The paint layer shows damage from abrasion and craquelure but remains stable. Paint losses down to the canvas are visible, especially around the edges. Retouches or overpainting are noticeable in some areas.

The surface is covered with degraded varnish layers and heavy surface dirt.
